The Ultimate California Coast Adventure
CULTURE • ADVENTURE • CUISINE
Picture this: You're cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway, windows down, the salty ocean breeze filling your lungs, your best friend by your side. That's the essence of a California coast road trip – an adventure that combines stunning vistas, diverse experiences, and the freedom of the open road.
As someone who's traversed this iconic route multiple times (with Ahsoka, my loyal canine companion in tow), I can attest that there's no better way to experience the Golden State. From the sun-soaked beaches of Southern California to the rugged cliffs of Big Sur and the foggy shores of San Francisco Bay, this journey offers a little bit of everything.
Our route will take us from the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles, through the laid-back charm of Santa Barbara, the awe-inspiring beauty of Big Sur and Carmel, and finally to the eclectic streets of San Francisco. Along the way, we'll explore hidden gems, indulge in world-class cuisine, and soak in the diverse cultures that make California so unique.
Fast Facts:
Airports: Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
Transportation: Rent a car that suits your style and needs.
Best time to visit: California's Mediterranean climate means great weather year-round, but I personally love late spring (April-May) or early fall (September-October) for optimal conditions and fewer crowds.
Ideal length of stay: While you could rush through in 3-5 days, I recommend at least a week to truly savor the experience. During my last trip with Ahsoka, we spent 10 days and still felt like we could have used more time!
Dress code: Think layers and versatility. Pack everything from beachwear to hiking gear, and don't forget a warm jacket for those cool coastal evenings.
Days 1-4: Los Angeles & Santa Monica: Where Urban Chic Meets Beachside Bliss
Los Angeles and Santa Monica offer a perfect blend of city excitement and coastal relaxation. From star-studded Hollywood to the bohemian vibes of Venice Beach, this area is a kaleidoscope of experiences.
On my last trip, I discovered that LA is surprisingly dog-friendly. Many restaurants with outdoor seating welcome furry friends, and there are numerous off-leash dog beaches where your pup can frolic in the waves.
Cool fact: Did you know that Santa Monica Pier's iconic Ferris wheel is solar-powered? It's the world's first and only solar-powered Ferris wheel, making it an eco-friendly attraction.
What to Do in LA & Santa Monica
Beyond the must-see Santa Monica Pier and window shopping on Rodeo Drive, I highly recommend exploring some of LA's hidden gems. Hike the trails in Runyon Canyon Park for stunning city views (and it's dog-friendly!). For a unique experience, visit the La Brea Tar Pits, where you can see active excavation sites and learn about Ice Age fossils. If you’re into art, The Getty, Hammer Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), The Broad and the Gagosian do not disappoint.
Cool fact: The Getty Center, besides housing an impressive art collection, is an architectural marvel. Its travertine exterior comes from a single quarry in Italy and covers about 1.2 million square feet!
Where to Eat in LA & Santa Monica
LA's food scene is as diverse as its population. Don't miss these local favorites:

Gjusta: This Venice bakery and deli is a local institution. Their baklava croissant is life-changing.

Day 4-6: Santa Barbara: The American Riviera
As you cruise north from LA, the landscape transforms. About two hours later (traffic permitting), you'll find yourself in Santa Barbara, a city that perfectly balances laid-back beach vibes with upscale charm.
On my last trip through Santa Barbara with my four-legged co-pilot, I was struck by how the Spanish colonial architecture and towering palm trees create a distinctly Mediterranean atmosphere. It's no wonder this area is often called the American Riviera.
Cool fact: Santa Barbara's climate is so ideal that it only experiences about 20 inches of rain per year, and enjoys over 300 days of sunshine annually!
What to Do in Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts and culture lovers alike. Start with a sunset stroll on Stearns Wharf, California's oldest working wooden wharf, and then explore the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, which spans 78 acres of California native plants and offers 5.5 miles of hiking trails. Dive into the vibrant "Funk Zone," a neighborhood filled with wine tasting rooms, artisan shops, and street art, before visiting the Santa Barbara Museum Of Art , which showcases work spanning five centuries and multiple cultures. For an extra dose of nature, don't miss the exotic plants at Lotusland and the native flora at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden.
Dog-owner tip: Arroyo Burro Beach (locals call it Hendry's Beach) is a fantastic off-leash dog beach. My pup loved splashing in the waves and making new furry friends here!
Cool fact: Santa Barbara is home to the oldest grapevine in California, planted in 1842. Known as the "Mammoth Vine," it's still alive and producing grapes at the Santa Barbara Winery.

Day 6-8: Big Sur & Carmel: Where the Mountains Meet the Sea
As you wind your way up the coast from Santa Barbara, you'll eventually reach Big Sur, a rugged stretch of coastline that's arguably one of the most beautiful drives in the world. The journey to Big Sur is as breathtaking as the destination itself.
On my last trip through this area with my dog, I was constantly in awe of the dramatic cliffs plunging into the Pacific. We'd often pull over at vista points just to take in the majesty of it all. My furry friend seemed just as captivated, his nose working overtime with all the new scents.
Cool fact: Big Sur's Bixby Creek Bridge, one of the most photographed bridges in California, was completed in 1932 and stands 260 feet high. It's an architectural marvel and a prime example of how human engineering can complement natural beauty.
What to Do in Big Sur & Carmel
This region is a nature lover's paradise, offering a range of must-see spots. Begin with Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, often called the "crown jewel" of California's state parks, where you can enjoy incredible hiking trails and wildlife viewing. Visit Pfeiffer Beach, known for its unique purple sand and stunning rock formations, and take a scenic drive along 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove for breathtaking coastal views. In Carmel, explore the town's numerous art galleries, boutiques, and wine-tasting rooms, and visit the restored 18th-century Carmel Mission. After a day of activity, unwind at Refuge Spa, the perfect place to relax and recharge.

On my last visit with my canine companion, I was struck by how dog-friendly the city is. From numerous off-leash areas in Golden Gate Park to pet-welcoming cafes in neighborhoods like the Marina and Noe Valley, San Francisco truly embraces its four-legged residents and visitors.
Cool fact: San Francisco's famous fog even has a name - Karl. It has its own social media accounts and has become a beloved city mascot!
